Why Food Banks Matter More Than Ever

The UK is facing a growing crisis of food insecurity, and food banks have become a vital lifeline for millions of people.
Recent data shows that 4% of people in the UK used a food bank in the past year, with demand rising sharply over the last decade . What was once an emergency service is now a regular necessity for many families.
In fact, the number of emergency food parcels distributed has surged from around 60,000 in 2010 to 2.89 million in 2024/25 .
The Drivers Behind Rising Demand
The increase in food bank usage in the UK is not accidental. It reflects deeper structural challenges:
Cost of living crisis impacting everyday essentials
Low incomes and rising debt, cited in 72% of referrals
Delays in Universal Credit payments
Housing insecurity and unemployment
At the same time, food banks are under pressure. Many report a widening gap between donations and demand, forcing them to purchase more food just to meet basic needs .
The Hidden Scale of Food Poverty
What’s most striking is that food bank usage only tells part of the story.
An estimated 7.5 million people in the UK live in food-insecure households, yet 84% of those with very low food security are not using food banks .
This highlights a critical truth:👉 The need is far greater than the visible demand.
A Simple Way to Make a Difference
Food banks are not just about food. They provide dignity, stability, and often access to wider support such as debt advice and benefits guidance.
But they cannot meet this growing need alone.
At The Florence Foundation, we see first-hand how small, targeted funding can unlock significant local impact—helping food banks expand, reach more people, and provide essential support when it’s needed most.
